David L. Kaltman was born on June 21, 1960, in New York City. He lived in Huntington Station, New York, with his mother Rhoda, his father Sidney, his brother Robert, and his sister Susan. The family moved to Chicago in 1972 and to Potomac, Maryland, in 1974. David attended Herbert Hoover Jr. High School and graduated from Winston Churchill High School in 1978. He attended the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1982. From 1982 until 1985, he worked for a real estate brokerage firm in Greenbelt, Maryland.

At the age of 25, David passed away in a car accident, killed just blocks from his home by a driver found to have been under the influence of alcohol. The David L. Kaltman Memorial Golf Tournament is held every year in memory of David. It is a celebration of both his love of life and his love of golf. Proceeds from the tournament each year are given to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.
